Sarasota groups work together to address homelessness
SARASOTA - The Suncoast Partnership to End Homelessness says the homeless population has skyrocketed because of the bad economy. Homelessness has an effect on residents and businesses in our community; the problem is that there's a lack of resources.
That's why the Downtown Sarasota Alliance recently held a meeting about homelessness. More than 120 people showed up, all wanting to help.
You often see people standing on street corners holding signs asking for money or a job; some Suncoast residents see it everyday.

County program focuses on reselling foreclosed homes
SARASOTA - Studies show that more American families are one paycheck away from facing foreclosure or going homeless. And on the Suncoast, neighborhoods rich, poor, new and old are all being impacted negatively by the large number of foreclosed homes.
But Sarasota County is taking part in a new federal program to get people back in homes and stabilize neighborhoods plagued by foreclosure.
The Suncoast Partnership to End Homelessness says that one of the main reasons for homelessness is lack of affordable housing. Sarasota County's Neighborhood Stabilization Program is trying to change that.

State education commissioner listens to Sarasota schools at forum - WWSB ABC 7 Florida - Sarasota, Bradenton, Venice, North Port, Siesta Key Breaking News, Weather, Sports and Traffic on the Suncoast |
SARASOTA - A billion dollar federal grant to shore up Florida schools was what State Education Commissioner Eric Smith was talking about Monday afternoon at a public forum sponsored by the Sarasota County School Board.
The money is available through a federal program called Race To The Top, and state officials are pretty sure they can get it.
Smith told the gathering of educators, students, parents and community leaders that the odds are very good Florida will receive the highly-sought grant. It would bring almost a billion and a half dollars to Florida schools.

Condom Week intended to lift access barriers
This month is officially the Adopt a Rescued Rabbit Month, the American Heart Month and the Bake for Family Fun Month. And nestled among Women's Heart Week, the International Hoof Care Week and Dump Your Significant Jerk Week, is National Condom Week. It began on Sunday, Valentine's Day.
The event has been adopted by the Planned Parenthood and local chapters are marking the week by participating in some local events to commemorate the often passed-over observance. By participating, the group means to hand out condoms and safe-sex brochures on college campuses.
Planned Parenthood is trying to impress on sexually active individuals the importance of using condoms to protect against sexually transmitted diseases, of which some 19 million cases are reported every year. Of that, health officials say, almost half are between 15 and 24 years old.

Renegade Catholics ordained in Sarasota (AP)
SARASOTA — A former nun who the Vatican says has been excommunicated ordained two women priests and one deacon in Sarasota, part of a controversial movement claiming to be an offshoot of the Catholic Church.
The ordinations were the first in Florida by the group known as Roman Catholic Womenpriests, which preaches equality for women by allowing them into the priesthood and plays down allegiance to the pope.
The Catholic Church calls the movement and the ordinations illegitimate, and the local diocese sent letters to parishes saying any Catholics who attend the ceremony will be excommunicated - a banishment from participating in church sacraments until forgiveness is given by a priest. Florida slow to halt texting drivers
After failing for two years, proponents of a state texting-while-driving ban are optimistic a measure will pass this year.
TALLAHASSEE -- Steve Augello's daughter died in a 2008 car accident shortly after sending a text message from her cellphone.
Months later, the Spring Hill resident came to Tallahassee, like many grieving parents before him, asking for a law to banish what led to the grief. For him, it's text messaging while driving.

Mortgage Fraud Capital of America?
By Scott Finn
TAMPA (2010-2-8) -
The man behind one of the largest real estate frauds in Florida has recently turned FBI informant and could implicate dozens of others in a massive property flipping scheme.
The role of Sarasota real estate broker Craig Adams was revealed by the Sarasota Herald-Tribune as part of their ongoing investigation of mortgage fraud.
WUSF News Director Scott Finn interviewed investigative reporter Matthew Doig about Adams, and his scheme involving at least $200 million in property value, according to court documents.
Adams has implicated at least 30 people so far in his schemes, Doig said. More are expected to come as the investigation continues.
“This is just a small piece of it. It really could put Sarasota on the map as the mortgage fraud capital of the country,” Doig said.

Heed the siren song of the Suncoast
Siesta Key
This is by far our family’s favorite vacation venue. It has hands-down the most beautiful beach — long and wide and wonderful white sand. The island is about eight miles long, and about five miles of that is uninterrupted beach (a fabulous place for a morning run, by the way).
Siesta Beach is an easy-access public beach with lots of parking. It does get a tad crowded at peak spring-break weekends, but when that happens you can just mosey past the public beach area to Crescent Beach, which serves the many beachfront lodgings and has more limited public access, keeping crowds down.
Or you can wait until later in the day to hit the beach. Sunbathers are all but gone by 4 p.m., and sticking around for sunset is never a bad choice. There’s an almost surreal glow as the sun disappears below the horizon.
An absolute favorite place for a bite — we make a point to eat out here at least once on every trip — is City Pizza. It’s small and, situated next to a 7-11, doesn’t look like much from the outside, but the food is great and the service always friendly.
Visitors to Siesta Key also will want to take an afternoon (or more) to hit the Village. Siesta Key Village is a strip of shops and restaurants a block or so from the beach at the northern end of the island. This is where you’ll find nightlife, too, if you’re looking.
For stays on Siesta Key, which is connected to Sarasota by bridges on the northern and southern end of the island, your options are numerous. We’ve pretty much done it all here — stayed at hotel-resorts, rented condos from individual owners and worked with property management companies for various lodgings, from small efficiencies to a four-bedroom home we shared with friends. Two rental companies we’ve used successfully are www.siesta4rent.com and www.siestakey.com.

Manatee County farmers, growers may feel budget cut pains - Lakewood Ranch Herald - BradentonHerald.com
MANATEE — Crop and farm-trade subsidies would be shaved under the Obama administration’s fiscal 2011 budget proposed Monday, one of the steps being considered in an time of soaring budget deficits.
“It’s time we put our fiscal house in order,” Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said.
Farm subsidies traditionally go to farmers who grow staple crops, such as rice, wheat, soybeans and corn.
Although Manatee County farmers typically don’t receive subsidies because their specialty crops — citrus, tomatoes and other fruits and vegetables — don’t qualify, they could still feel the effects of federal budget cutting.
