02/02 LOCAL BRIEFS: Manasota Envirothonset for today - Lakewood Ranch Herald - BradentonHerald.com
Twenty teams representing seven high schools will represent Manatee and Sarasota counties in the Manasota Envirothon 2010 beginning at 9 a.m. today at Oscar Scherer State Park, 1843 Tamiami Trail, Osprey.
Manatee teams competing are from Southeast, Bayshore, Manatee and Central high schools. Sarasota teams competing will be from Riverview, Booker and Phoenix Academy.
About 100 students will be competing for awards and a chance to represent their county in the State Envirothon to be held in April at Silver River State Park in Ocala. The State Envirothon will send the winning Florida team to compete at the National Canon Envirothon at California State University in Fresno.
Students will be tested in the areas of forestry, soils, aquatics and wildlife. The topic “Protection of Groundwater through Urban, Agricultural and Environmental Planning” will be incorporated into test questions.
